The Burrito Bowl Book Tag

Hi! So I was tagged by Joey at Thoughts and Afterthoughts and Victoria at Addlepates and Book Nerds to complete the Burrito Bowl Book Tag! This tag was a collaboration between Joey and Cristina at Girl in the Pages. Awesome (and yummy) tag, you guys! And as Joey has said in his original post, this tag “is inspired by Chipotle’s burrito bowl, long lineups, euphoric food comas, and The Great Carnitas Shortage of 2015.” Oh. Oh. I think I’m finally understanding why Joey likes corn so much. Burrito bowls have a lot of corn, lol.

And I finally went to Chipotle! (I literally was pronouncing that place Cheh-pot-lee for the longest time. facepalm) Well I’m a vegetarian so I’ve learned that I don’t really like burrito bowls. They’re more like interesting bowls of salad and beans for me, haha. I now know there’s a tofu option, but southwestern tofu make me a little hesitant to try it. It can’t be prepared the same way Asian food is, right? I don’t know, maybe I should just try it one day. But enough of my food habits. Let’s devour this tag?

Rice: The Foundation – “The book that got you into reading (or book blogging)”
I think most of you guys already know that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-that’s right I read the last book HP first-was the reason why I started to enjoy reading. If you’re not familiar with that fun story, I’ll redirect you to my post of The Harry Potter Tag. And I guess the book that got me into book blogging was Unbroken, which was my first review. After reading that heartbreaking but inspiring biography, it really generated the bookworm (not really fangirl) in me. Before reading that one, I also took a reading hiatus of five years where I only read a lot of school assigned literature and not much fun reading. With Unbroken, I really wanted to share that the story to the blogosphere (even though I had like two followers and there was already a lot of buzz surrounding the book because of recent release of the film).

Beans: The Filler – “A book with a whole lot of nothing happening”
Hunter by Mercedes Lackey. Okay, so yeah, I’ve only read like 10% of this so far, but everything is really slow and the writing is so tedious. Just yeah. At this rate I just may never finish. OTL

Protein: The Building Block – “A book quote to live by”
This is kind of a challenge for me since I don’t tend to notice if I like a phrase or take notes on quotes while reading. That’s probably why I seldom use quotes in my book reviews. But on my post of the Real Neat Blog Award, I mentioned that “hardworkers in life in general [inspire me], I guess. Admirable and determined people. Or people that encourage and influence me to grow and become a better individual.” So I thought this quote from A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara is quite appropriate about the influential people bit:

“You won’t understand what I mean now, but someday you will: the only trick of friendship, I think, is to find people who are better than you are—not smarter, not cooler, but kinder, and more generous, and more forgiving—and then to appreciate them for what they can teach you, and to try to listen to them when they tell you something about yourself, no matter how bad—or good—it might be, and to trust them, which is the hardest thing of all. But the best, as well.”

Fajitas: The Crunch of Texture – “A book with immaculate world-building”
I would say Harry Potter because that’s my prototype and comparison to amazing world building… but I’ll go with A Darker Shade of Magic. The idea of the parallel Londons is pretty brilliant. You can read my review here (it’s scheduled though and won’t be available to open until October 27th, 2015).

Salsa: The Dance of Flavour – “A book that kept you on your toes”
The Hunger Games trilogy or any Cassandra Clare book. I remember the moments in which my heart was beating so fast while reading these. I really wish I could be able to experience these for the first time again. Sigh.

Corn: The Explosion of Sweetness – “A memorable scene involving friendship/romance”
Every Sarah Dessen book has to have that scene. The one that makes you sigh in relief that the protagonist is finally understanding “like” or “friendship” if not “love.”

Cheese: The Bond of Calcium – “Two characters from different books you wish could be friends”
If possible, I would want Will to have been able to meet Jace. I’m not really going to explain why because of TMI and TID spoilers, but for those of you that’ve read the books know why. 😉

Sour Cream: The Tangy Topper – “The quirkiest character you’ve ever read (protagonist or supporting)”
Luna Lovegood from HP is pretty high in the ranks, but I will also cast my vote to Miranda Kane in the Shadow Falls series. I mean she has pink streaks in her hair and she’s so hilarious.

Guacamole: The Cost of Creaminess – “A book you paid too much for (based on utility experienced)”
Right now, it’s going to be my collection of The Heroes of Olympus. I used to be-and still am-a Riordan fan but I’ve bought these books when they were all first released at full price, but I still haven’t read most of them. I’m only on The Mark of Athena. I know they’ll be worthwhile buys later on when I enjoy them but I probably should have waited and got them if they ever went on sale.

Lettuce: The Handful of Crispness – “A refreshing concept/theme in a book”
Love triangles, forbidden love, and all those cliché tropes actually don’t bother me as much as reading a book in which a girl strongly believes a boy has changed her. It’s okay if the love interest is a good influence and all, but for her world to change with vivid colors and all that… it’s too unrealistic? I rather see character development with powerful memos like love but not a complete reliance on the emotion for the character to change, if that makes sense (I’m probably just rambling by now). For me, I was really happy with how Elyse D’Abreau’s confidence grew in The Summer of Chasing Mermaids. You can read how much I adored that book here.

Chips: Le Pièce de Résistance – “A must-read recommendation if you like [this book/genre—you decide!]”
If you like paranormal fantasy for young adults as much as I do. A few must-reads are anything by Cassandra Clare, some Holly Black, and Richelle Mead. They’re like the queens of this genre. However, if I had to pick one book I think I’d choose Clockwork Angel because it really reflects this genre well. There’s a conglomerate of supernaturals and it’s a good way to see if you like these type of books.

Tabasco: The Kick to the Face – “Your favourite fight/action sequence”
How could I not choose Shadow Kiss? In this installment of VA, which was my favorite by the way, Rose is going through her practice tests of learning how to protect the Moroi. The teachers are the pretend Strigoi and making surprise attacks on the Guardian students. The fight scenes were fantastic, especially one particular one. 😉
