Secret Life of a Book Blogger Tag

Secret Life of a Book Blogger

Happy Tuesday everyone! I decided to schedule yet another post today (I am away busy taking my fall semester finals when this posts) because I really, really need to catch up with my tags and awards. I mean I have tags since May. That’s like 6+ months ago!

Anyway, this was one of my “May” tags and I’m pretty excited to share this one. Maybe you’ll get to learn a little more about me as a blogger… because this is the Secret Life of Book Blogger Tag! I was tagged by Trey at Trey Schnarr Books, Casey at Inspired by the Page, Raven at Dreamy Addictions, Joey at Thoughts and Afterthoughts, and Kelly at Dancing Through the Pages. Gosh, this post is way belated, but thank you all again for thinking of Xingsings and tagging me!

Okay, this is going to be a text heavy post so let’s move on with the questions!

  1. How long have you been a blogger?
Well before this one I ran an Exo blog on tumblr that I still use to this day actually. It’s also called Xingsings. So yup I’m the very Xingsings from tumblr! This blog stemmed from the moment I had an idea that I’d like to share my passion for books with other people. So this WP blog Xingsings was born on January 2nd, 2015. There’s actually a funny story to this though… My first blog post (don’t try to look for it; so embarrassing) was actually created in 2014 and was supposed to be scheduled to published on New Year’s Day (I wanted an easy blogiversary date to remember) but being the newbie blogger I was at the time I’m not sure what I pressed but it never scheduled when I checked on January 2nd. So yup, after that incident I never scheduled my posts again… until October 2015, when I decided to try that WP feature again.

  1. At what point do you think you will stop?
I think most people that have done this tag have said something along the lines of “not anytime soon.” For me… it may be when I start pharmacy school which may or may not be soon depending what the admissions committee thinks of me (for those of you that are new to Xingsings; yup, I applied to professional school this year as a sophomore in my undergraduate studies. It’s a little complicated to explain how I was eligible to apply, maybe I’ll do a separate personal post about it if I happen to get in). Since the rigor and course load is so much different in professional school compared to undergraduate… it’s probably the best idea if I took a break while I’m on that path. I really do love blogging but I’m the type of blogger that likes to interact with the community (not so much on social media but through catching up with other bloggers via blog hopping). And I just can’t do that while being in pharmacy school; sometimes real life has to receive priority. With all this being said, I don’t think I would quit completely though since I really enjoy this hobby too much. Hopefully I would still be able to publish a few posts here and there and still keep in contact with all of you (maybe even get the hang of using Twitter and joining Twitter chats; I really should use that social platform more).

  1. What is the best thing?
I’m assuming about blogging… The community aspect, I think. I love how there are just so many bookworms that share their love of reading through blogging and social media. It’s amazing that we can have an internet community so close-knit all the while being global.
  1. What is the worst thing? What do you do to make it okay?
For me it’s something kind of silly and more self related than anything to do with other people. Sometimes I have blogger insecurity and wonder why some posts “don’t do as well” when I post them. But these insecurities never stick for long since I remind myself that I started this blog out for fun and not for other people to read really (though it was a nice bonus when I learned that others did read what I shared sometimes).
  1. How long does it take you to create/find pictures to use?
Well I also have a bookstagram in which I post pictures daily. It takes me about twenty minutes to find, assemble, and adjust the lighting, and then take the picture. But don’t worry! This isn’t for just one photo, I usually take 5 to 10 photos at once to save time and effort. Plus, the lighting looks more consistent this way because there’s only certain days where I can take pictures at home (other days I’m out at school from early morning to late at night). Also, my photos are filter free so that saves some of the decision making and time aspect. As for the banners I make… It honestly doesn’t take that long either since I’m pretty comfortable with the programs (PicMonkey, Canva, MeituPic, etc; depends on my mood) I use now. Maybe five to ten minutes?
  1. Who is your book crush?
Jem Carstairs. But you guys knew that! 😉
  1. What author would you like to have on your blog?
Most definitely Cassandra Clare! She’s my favorite ya fantasy/paranormal writer. Along with Twilight, TMI introduced me to the world of ya books which was an important reading transition in my childhood/teenagehood. However, I would totally settle (look at me being pretentious) with my other favorites like Sarah Dessen or Richelle Mead.
  1. What do you wear when you write your blog posts?
Why this is a strange question! Well I mostly blog at home so I guess comfy clothes that I usually lounge around in. At school, it’s probably my usual jeans and t-shirt combo, nothing too fancy.
  1. How long does it take you to prepare?
Prepare myself to blog? Prepare a blog post? Prepare what exactly?? If it’s to prepare a blog post… Probably an average of maybe thirty minutes (which is much faster than it used to be when I first began) but I do go back several times to edit for several days before I schedule or publish the post. I also have a rule where if I don’t feel like writing a review I just won’t write one. Hence why some reviews are written months after I’ve read the books. And that’s why I always have an annotation at the beginning of my reviews stating when I completed this book. First, to show the people that read my reviews the time of reference (I sometimes talk about holidays or events in my life in my reviews) of when I read it, but ultimately the date thing is for me. I started this blog to document what I read so I wanted to know when I read it specifically (I am aware that GR does this too but I rather it be on my blog as well).
  1. How do you feel about the book blogger community/culture?
At first I was quite surprised by everything. The fangirl jargon (it’s somewhat different from the K-pop kind); the bookish memes, tags, and nominations; the use of social media; how kind and supportive bloggers were were all things that were new to me. But it never really felt overwhelming; honestly, I really feel accepted and at home in this internet community more than anything now. So I guess warm is how I’d describe this awesome book blogging community.
  1. What do you think one should do to get a successful blog?
Well I’m going to slightly go off of what Joey mentioned in his post of this tag. It all depends what the blogger terms as a successful blog. I’m almost at my one year blogiversary but I really don’t feel like I’m one to give advice on this subject yet. Maybe one day!
  1. Who do you tag?
My usual blogger buddies* (I know some of them aren’t online anymore but I’m just kind of set that this is going to be the list I’ll always tag no matter what (think of it as my follow forever), unless they specify they rather not be tagged or have become tag/award-free) and everyone that is reading this post that also blogs!

*I later noticed a lot of people already did this tag so I had to edit this list. 😅

5 New Bloggers I Want to Tag (and when I typed “new” that doesn’t necessarily mean new to the blogging community but new to me or I’d like to get to know these individuals more hence why I’m tagging them. I will most likely continue to do this for future tags.)

So that’s it! I hope you guys learned a little bit more about me perhaps. And, as always, I hope you have a lovely Tuesday! 😀

This is such a great tag, Summer, thank you for thinking about me! ❤ (and I’m so glad to be in the usual blogger buddies section ❤ And, before anything, can I say it’s great to see this picture of you taking an exam, and I hope it went well! ❤
I can totally relate when you’re talking about your blogger insecurities, I have some of that, too. We all need a little reminder someday that we’re doing this for us, first 🙂 And the book blogging community is so welcoming, so generous and so sweet, I’m forever grateful for it, it’s so great! 🙂
Thank you so much for tagging me 🙂

You’re very welcome, Marie! I know you’ve been blogging longer than I have but I feel very thankful since I think you were part of the handful of people that first followed my blog in the beginning. ❤
And hehe, thank you (about the photo of me taking my exam)! The test did go well. 🙂 And aww, I’m so relieved to hear I’m not the only one that has blogger insecurities sometimes; it’s kind of embarrassing to admit actually. 😛 🙂

I love your answers! I’m so sad that you may be going when you start pharmacy school, but I would like to see a post on how you got in (if you do.) because it could be really helpful to me too. Good luck!
I totally agree on worrying about the views you get on posts. I also have to sit back and be like “It’s fine. BREATH.” Haha.
    As usual, great post!

Ah, thanks so much! And thank you for tagging me, Trey (like ages ago in May, lol)! And I may be doing a post about the pharmacy school application process after all. Are you thinking about pharmacy school yourself? 🙂 Haha! I’m really so relieved to hear I’m not the only one with blogger insecurities. 🙂

Hahaha I’m so happy that I’m on the forever list 😀 ❤ Btw I love all of the snow flying around your blog! It makes me so happy! Hehe, as always I love your long and detailed answers. I love the bookish community so much too! Everybody is so kind and it’s wonderful being able to fangirl with everyone about my favourite books and characters (btw I love Jem too. But you can have him since I’ve already claimed Will. I won’t be greedy like Tessa). The community is so welcoming. I know this, since you were my first commenter and I was all warm and fuzzy on the inside afterwards ❤

Hehe, thank you! I wasn’t able to activate the snow last year since I started my blog after December, but I’m so happy I’ve finally been able to try this feature. I doubt we’ll get actual snow in my state this year but this program will have to suffice. 😉 (It kind of feels weird that it’s technically like summer over there right?) Ah yes, the bookish community is so welcoming. I really want to be more involved and try twitter chats to meet more non-WP bloggers someday. Aww, I still can’t believe that. Now you’re like this pro blogger that juggles posting on two blogs. ❤ 😀

It’s interesting to see that you take 30 minutes to prepare for a blog post! That’s pretty fast compared to me. I sometimes even write it down on paper before I transfer it and all that takes at least an hour on my good days lol. And girl, you never have to worry about your post not doing as well as others. In fact, you should teach me how you get such a dedicated group of book blogger buddies :p I adore all your posts!
Also, I totally forgot you were only a second year! Are you trying to get into an accelerated program?
And of course, I’m so honored to be a part of your “usual blogger buddies”; it makes me feel special HAHA

And omg LOL, I didn’t know that banner pic was of you taking an exam. I literally thought you just google imaged a random pic of students taking a test LOL i was like why did you pick that picture.

    • Summer @ Xingsings says:

Thanks so much, Carolyn! ❤ Actually I probably should have clarified more in the post but it takes me 30 minutes to get a draft. I still have to go back days later to edit it several times for grammar and spelling mistakes (and even then I still have a myriad of errors when I publish the post). XD And aww, honestly, I’m not sure how the blogger buddies came along but I literally feel like I have a friendship with each person I’ve talked before. Like you and our bubble tea discussions. 😉 So of course you’re special!

Ah yes, there’s this new thing at USC (the SC one, not Cali of course, but I think you already knew that LOL) where you can get your bachelors degree in pharmaceutical sciences if you get into pharmacy school you’re sophomore year of undergraduate. But that’s only if you get all the regular core classes completed within two years. I got a lot of them done in high school since my school offered a lot of APs. So technically the PharmD program itself won’t be accelerated, but I guess you can say that I got in early-ish. Though, there are other 2nd year applicants like myself but some may or may not have finished the regular core classes and will be starting pharm school without a bachelors degree. Then again, the degree they’re rewarding us will be pretty useless if we didn’t finish pharmacy school anyway. But yeah, hope that was not too complicated and made some sense. LOL. XD

I am so glad to be included in your forever follow list 🙂 Aww Summer, I’m gonna miss you when you’re no longer as active in the blogosphere. Well there’s still Instagram and Twitter though. Priorities really have to come first. This is for Ireland and for all your other dreams’ fulfillment! ^.^ I wish you all the best in pharmacy school 🙂
And oh I thought we have the same blogiversary month. Mine’s February. Still close though. Waaaah we’re almost 1 year! ^_^

Of course, Trisha! Doesn’t matter that we have different blogiversaries. I still consider us to be blogging twins (or triplets with Erika) forever. 😛 And ah, I’m going to miss you and the blogosphere when the time comes, too. T.T But you’re right, real life and achieving our dreams are pretty important. ❤

Ahh yes yes Erika started hers in January too. Yey we’re triplets turning 1 next year!
And I’m just so happy you got in pharm school! Read all the books, watch all the anime and koreanovela all you want now. By the time you start schooling, these will all be luxuries you’re going to miss. Good luck! 🙂

AW SUMMER GLOMPS FOREVER Thank you for tagging me! ♥
Oh my gosh 30 minutes! You speedy writer, you. Can you give me your writing powers?! It takes me like, 2 – 3 days for mine LOL I’m the slowest writer in existence. (I was the sort of student that started their assessment before everyone and would still be working on it the day before it was due…)
I’m going to miss you ubermucho when you go to pharm school! But I’d be super happy for you and will look forward to your posts! ♥

Oh, lol! Well it takes me 30 minutes to create just a draft (I probably should have specified) but it’s so not ready to be published. I still go back days later several times to edit and check for mistakes. 😛 And even then, I’ll find a lot of spelling/grammar errors after it’s been posted. XD
Aww me too, Chooi! ❤ And you’re very welcome! 😀

Haha! No Summer, it’s just what is the best thing. 😉 I’ll be sad if you stop blogging, but I hope you get into pharmacy school! Best of luck! Also, I’m still on the lingo struggle bus. I get so confused when every single series is abbreviated! I have to sit and think about it. I usually go for the most likely series – Throne of Glass? The Mortal Instruments? WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?! Because I’m cool and an old fogey like that.

    • Summer @ Xingsings says:

Aww, thanks so much, Jordyn! ❤ And LOL, I am still like that. It’s especially difficult when there’s some series that can be called several different names. Like I think of Percy Jackson and the Olympians to be just PJ but some readers use PJO/PJatO. It’s all too much to keep up with. XD

First, congrats on getting into pharmacy school Summer! That is so amazing and I am so proud and inspired by all of your hard work. Also, I know I have said this before, but great job on finding the right balance of posting at a consistence pace while also learning that extrinsic outcomes (page views, # of comments on each post, etc.) are not the most important thing about blogging. I love how you keep your responses natural and authentic. Also, I appreciate that we share a crush on Jem Carstairs – though he bats on your team and not mine, so I guess you have the advantage on that one.

I hope we can still hear from you as you get busier with time and professional school. I know when I was in high school I used to post about once per week, but that dropped at a sharp rate once college started, just because of balancing so many different obligations. I still think quality comes before quantity, and no matter how many or how few posts you write, I am confident that your dedicated readers will appreciate the time you take to share your life and your ideas with us. Also, hope you are doing well this holiday season! (:

Ah, thanks so much for always finding the time to visit my blog and leaving kind comments, Thomas! And thank you! I don’t start pharmacy school until fall of 2016 but I am very excited, for sure.

Right now, I’m able to balance scheduling posts with school and work, but the frequency of my posts is going to certainly decline in 2016. But you’re right, quality over quantity is very important. And the friends I’ve made on here will remain supportive even if I’m not online quite as often.

Anyway, hope you’re having a fantastic winter break as well, Thomas. Happy new year! 🙂
