The Book Courtship Tag

Book Courtship Tag

Hi! Tomorrow is Valentine’s day! Any of you doing anything special? If not, be my valentine! 😉 I don’t have many plans tomorrow… I may be baking some chocolate chip cookies since I haven’t done that in years. I’m still going strong with the Decembers sweets ban overall… but my dad loves cookies, so yeah, tomorrow’s batch is for him probably, haha.

Anyway, this Saturday (Saturdays have become my tackling the old tag/awards day) I thought it’d be fitting to complete The Book Courtship Tag. I was tagged by my lovely blogger buddy, Erika at Erika at Bookventureland in early October 2015. Thank you!

Note: This is a 2015 tag, meaning I was first tagged in 2015. I’m just trying to go through all the awards and tags from my 2015 queue. But I am an tag/award free blog in that I won’t be doing any more tags/awards after I go through the 2015 drafts. Sorry for the confusion!

Phase 1 – Initial Attraction: A book that you bought because of the cover?
This was a total book cover buy because I already own it electronically. But the embossing and typography is so beautiful. And the spine is so gorgeous (it looks like one of those vintage classics you see at old bookstores). ❤ Plus, I found this in the bargain section of my local bookstore. It was like $5 for hardcover so I couldn’t resist.

Phase 2 – First Impressions: A book that you got because of the summary?
This may be sort of dumb but I try not to read the summaries most of the time. I like the element of surprise when you start a book not really knowing what it’s about. However, for some more well known ones that I’ve skimmed reviews before on the blogosphere, of course, I know the gist of what they are about. But to answer this question, it has to be The Wrath and the Dawn! I bought a copy at full price, which I hardly do unless it’s a release from a favorite author such as Cassandra Clare or Richelle Mead, because I was going to Yallfest to meet Renee Ahdieh. But even before purchasing for that occasion, I knew I wanted it when I read the synopsis.

Phase 3 – Sweet Talk: A book with great writing?
I really fell in love with Sarah Ockler’s writing in The Summer of Chasing Mermaids. You can read my review here if you’d like. I seldom borrow books from the library because I like to own most of I read, but this was one I did got to library for. I really want to buy a physical copy of this though!

Phase 4 – First Date: A first book of a series which made you want to pick up the rest of the series?
Well it’s been a while since I’ve read the Heroes of Olympus series. I really want to reread the Percy Jackson and the Olympian series and perhaps the first two installments that I did read in HoO before I return to them though. The Bloodlines series is another one.

Phase 5 – Late Night Phone Calls: A book that kept you up all night?
The last one that was like that for me was  A Little Life. I actually just finished it this morning before I went to bed (meaning I stayed up really late). The writing in this tome was simply so breathtaking. There’s so many quotable lines and words of wisdom woven through this heartbreaking story. I seriously cried myself to sleep when I finished. Trigger warnings galore, for sure. So it’s not a book I recommend to everyone in that respect. I hope to find the words to compose a review and share my thoughts on this one with you guys soon though.

However, a total runner-up that I have been advocating for most readers to read lately has been Wolf by Wolf. You can read my review of that one here if you’d like.

Phase 6 – Always on my mind: A book you could not stop thinking about?
In terms of ya literature, I can never go without comparing something or thinking about any of Cassandra Clare books. It should be no surprised that I’m a big fan of TMI and TID. But now that I think about it, Harry Potter as well!

Phase 7 – Getting Physical: A book which you love the way it feels?
I seriously could hug this book in my sleep because I love how the raised typography feels. And it’s one of those matte covers that feels kind of sticky to touch. I don’t know I really like those though.

Phase 8 – Meeting the parents: A book which you would recommend to your family and friends?
The Glass Castle is the easiest bet for readers and non readers of all ages. It’s just easier because there something for everyone and it’s one of the few nonfiction books in which it reads as fiction with the short chapters and vignettes.

Phase 9 – Thinking about the future: A book or series you know you will re read many times in the future?
Hmm, I believe that would be A Little Princess, a classic I rarely talk about because I often forget I’ve read it. But it was my very first classic I read as I kid (I was ten, I think). I adored the story.

Phase 10 – Share the love: Who do you tag?

5 Bloggers I want to get to know more:

Ahh, I really loved the way how this tag transitioned. Hope you guys found it as amusing as I did. As always, hope you all have a lovely day! 🙂 And happy Valentine’s Day! ❤

Aw I love this 🙂 I fell in love with the writing in The Summer of Chasing Mermaids, too! It was such a pleasure to read that book, the writing felt like magic.
I really want to re-read City of Bones and the rest of TMI series…I feel like getting into it again, but when…there are SO many books to read!
Happy Valentine’s Day, Summer! I hope you’ll have a great day, and YAY for baking cookies, would you mind sending some over? 😉

Have your read any of Ockler’s other writing? I was looking at her previous work prior to The Summer of Chasing Mermaids and there seems to be so many mixed reviews. I know that shouldn’t stop me from trying them but I am a little hesitant now. And oh my gosh, well let me know if you do decide to reread TMI. I would love to buddy read it with you! And aww, this is so belated! But hope you had a lovely Valentine’s day, too, Marie! Sending a fresh batch of cookies on your way! 😉

I haven’t, but my sister recently bought #scandal, so I’m going to read that one soon! I understand, I saw that and I’m a little anxious, too, but I hope I won’t be disappointed. Ohh that would be really great! I have tons of books to read right now, and City of Bones is at home, and I’m not going home ’til too long…so I’ll re-read it probably in a while, but I’ll let you know, if you want 😀

I agree, Alicia! Cassandra Clare books are simply the best. Now we have Lady Midnight. A carrier recently updated and told me it’s been dispatched. Simply can’t wait! And me too! Second Chance Summer sounds like a sweet read. 🙂

Wow, I really admire people who could bake or cook because in the process of such, I know nothing except the tasting part. Haha!

I really want to read Wolf by Wolf (and I feel bad I might not be able to relate a lot on Aentee’s #DiverseYA book chat this month) but I can’t find a copy anywhere here D:

Happy Valentine’s to you too! Unfortunately, today’s a regular Sunday for me. No special plans or anything. LOL. Hope you and your dad have a great one 😉

I think I can cook alright but I am a horrible baker. Something always goes wrong. I’m sort of infamous among my friends for my awful cookies but they always appease me by eating them anyway. And yes, please read Wolf by Wolf soon! That book is so good!! Even though I read it I still wasn’t able to participate in the #DiverseYABC, sadly. It was 6 o’clock in the morning on the day of my midterms so I had to pass. I can’t do this month’s either since I don’t think I’ll be able to read the suggested text in time. Oh well. And thank you, Trisha! Me and my dad went out to eat for hearts day. 🙂

Such a fun tag Summer, I hope you had an awesome Valentines day, those chocolate chip cookies sound absolutely delicious! I love your Cassandra Clare set, it’s so beautiful! I’ve heard great things about Summer Chasing Mermaids, everyone seems to rave about it. Have a lovely weekend!

Thank you, Jeann! You should definitely get around to reading The Summer of Chasing Mermaids. This summer would be perfect time to do that! 😉 Oh and the Valentine’s day cookies didn’t turn out so great since I’m an awful baker. So it’s probably a good thing you didn’t taste any, haha. XD

You’re welcome, Kelly! A Little Life is one the best books I’ve ever read. The story, characters, everything was so, so heartbreaking but important. It’ll be a book I’ll remember for a really long time, for sure. But it is extremely depressing so get tissues ready if you do decide to pick it up!

Happy Valentine’s Day Summer! I hope it was a great one for you 🙂 I want to read Wolf by Wolf too, but my TBR is full until halfway this year, lol. And that nutella did not escape my notice there, lol. I saw you talking about The Summer of Chasing Mermaids a lot, so now I’m curious to see what it’s about! I might go and grab that from the library soonest 😀

Thank you, Joan! I ended up spending my Valentine’s day with my dad and it was wonderful (we ate out). I hope you had nice February with your family! And aww, well I hope you at least get to Wolf by Wolf this year. It’s just so good! Same goes for The Summer of Chasing Mermaids. It’s the perfect summer read. 🙂

Happy Valentine’s Day, Summer! Thanks for tagging me! I’ve actually already done this tag, but I’m thinking about doing it again because it’s such a cute tag haha. 😀 I’m kinda ashamed that I’ve read exactly zero of the books you mentioned, but I do look forward to reading them! Especially The Summer of Chasing Mermaids – I just read 20 Boy Summer by her and really enjoyed it.

This is so belated but I hope you had a nice Valentine’s Day, Paige! 20 Boy Summer sounded so cute; that’s definitely on my TBR. So glad to hear you enjoyed. Do give The Summer of Chasing Mermaids a go! I wasn’t expecting to love it as much as I did, but I found it a real contemporary gem. 🙂

I’m so happy you loved A Little Life Summer! I’m always worried people won’t like the books I like but I’m glad you did 🙂 And the Queen of the Tearling does have a really good cover _. I really like the black and gold color scheme.

I’m starting to feel like I love all the books you recommend me!! I’m going to listen to you the next time you tell me drop everything and read something. Like why did I wait to read A Little Life and TWC for so long?? (Actually A Little Life was massive… and a bit intimidating but I certainly could have made room for TWC. I only finished it in a few hours, which is a record for me. It’s been that long where I was that engrossed in a book.)

      • Carolyn says:

Ahhh yay!!!! I literally just saw your Goodreads update!! This is like perfect timing to read TWC too because you don’t have to wait that long for The Winner’s Kiss because trust me, that’s for the best 😉 Nothing makes me happier than when I recommend a book to someone and they like it. It makes it even more special coming from you 🙂

Thanks for the tag summer! Hope you had a nice time baking cookies! I’m probably too late to do this tag since Valentine’s Day was two days ago XD The Queen of the Tearling is such a gorgeous cover and what a bargain for $5! Everything Cassie Clare writes turns to gold! I think I’ve made up my mind to buy the new covers of TID 😀 I plan on reading more childrens classics this year, hope you enjoy A Little Princess!

The cookies were quite the disaster but I am infamous to be an awful baker so I wasn’t surprised. And hehe, that’s all right. I still have a lot of award/tag posts I want to release but I don’t think I will any time soon. You should buy the new TID covers. Now that I’ve caved I want to drag everyone down with me. Just kidding, you should treat yourself and buy them though. The what I thought was mustard yellow font is actually a pretty gold in real life! It looks much better in person! 🙂

I think maybe spend more time baking, it is really fun and relaxing 😉 I’ve been looking at instagram pics for the new TID and its had me drooling over it and its shiny! Yeah I see its gold and not mustard yellow! Okay I think I’m caving, I’ll get them 😀 I already treated myself to the Mistborn trilogy though lol. I’ll buy them once I’ve read everything on my shelf – thats sort of my rule before buying any new books XD

I love this tag so much!
I hope you had a lovely Valentine’s Day, whether you had a Valentine or not! Books will be your valentine, always. Hehe.
BUT OH MY, Wolf By Wolf is a SPECTACULAR novel, I cannot contain my love for that book. It’s a book I would buy multiple copies of, just so that I could give it to people so that they have no choice to read it… Is that a bit too forceful? Oops.

This was certainly one of the cutest tags. I loved the little mini headers for each question; they’re so fitting! And thank you, Josie! This is quite belated but I hope you had a nice Valentine’s Day! And OH MY GOSH. Wolf by Wolf was fab. I’m going to be reading Iron to Iron tonight. Looking forward to learn what really happened between Adele and the guys. ^.^

The Queen of the Tearling’s cover is absolutely gorgeous, I was ready to add it to my TBR based only on that, but then I’ve read the summary and I couldn’t not add it. Sometimes, your eyes make good judges.

AHHHH The Summer of Chasing Mermaids had one of the most beautiful styles of writing I have ever read!! ❤ ❤ I only wish I could write like that, haha. And omg I don’t blame you for caving in to buying TMI series in its new covers! THE SPINES ARE JUST KJSLJDOASD. Absolutely love them! (Also please tell me I’m not the only one super excited for Lady Midnight’s release on March 8th, omg. XD)
