Book Haul: January – May 2016

janfebmaraprmay2016haul

Oh gosh, this is going to be a MONSTER book haul. I kept putting off making this post because I was dreading having to face how many books (and bookmarks) I actually accumulated in less than half a year. But it’s finally here! And I’m sort of excited to show you guys what I’ve hauled in the past few months. But I’m going to warn you all now that this is going to be a massive haul and hence very long post. I’ll try to refrain from writing too much. 😛

(All of the books will have links to Goodreads. The bookmarks will not have links because they tend to get sold out and restocked at a frequent rate (therefore the links change too much). But they are all created and sold by Happy Hello Art on Etsy. I’ll make sure to have what they’re called on the site they’re sold in parentheses under the photo. So if they’re still in stock on the site you should be able to purchase them if you’re interested. And feel free to click the photos to enlarge and get a better look! 😀 )

Here goes!

Book Outlet

Of all these books, I’ve only read The Summer of Chasing Mermaids, which I borrowed from the library last year and loved so much. I gave it 5 stars and you can read my review here. I’ve also read both The Wind in the Willows and A Little Princess back when I was a young girl in elementary school. They’re fantastic-especially A Little Princess!

Oh and I did haul the new The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series via Bookoutlet. (I’m still missing City of Glass though.) Of course, I already had the old sets (which you’ll see later on in this post) but being such a fan I wanted the new ones, too. For now these are just chilling on my study desk (as pictured) in the room adjoined to my bedroom.

Books A Million

So in January that 3-for-2 manga sale was still going on (I’m starting to feel as if that’s not a sale anymore since it’s been around since Black Friday) so I bought a few more. I’m finally caught up with collecting Skip Beat, which I’m pretty happy about since it’s my favorite shoujo manga of all time.

And you guys may notice that I bought My True Love Gave to Me and The Queen of the Tearling. I actually already own both, The Queen of the Tearling electronically and the former as a review copy that was sent to me from the publisher last year. You can read my review of MTLGtM here if you’d like. I bought the The Queen of the Tearling because the physical form is breathtaking to look at; I really couldn’t resist. As for the anthology… I thought it’d make a great Christmas gift for one of my friends-that’s right, I’m one those people that Christmas shops year round. 😉

I picked up The People in the Trees because I loved/lamented over Yangaihara’s A Little Life earlier this year, which I’ll link a review here. And I was listening to Me Before You on Audible for a few chapters and decided to buy and finish it off on my own. It was so wonderful! I’m still trying to find the right words to compose a review.

So the only reason why I got Zeroes was because I wanted to find out who this Flicker was after Joey’s post. It was on sale for $3. You can’t beat that!

Book Depository

The Grapes of Wrath | I, Claudius | The Outsiders | The Outsiders bookmarks (“The Greasers”) | Dubliners | Breakfast at Tiffany’s

I love how simple and chic the Penguin Modern Classics. So for my birthday I went ahead and bought all the classics I’ve been meaning to collect for some time now. I haven’t read any of these but I think I’ll be pushing to read The Outsiders soon since it’s a classic everyone has read. Also I’m a huge fan of Steinbeck (he’s my favorite classic author) and I’ve read some Truman Capote when I was in high school.

Hehe, so I finally caved and bought the UK editions of A Darker Shade of Magic and A Gathering of Shadows. They were much cheaper than they were originally when I looked a year ago. (ADSoM was $20 more!)

A Darker Shade of Magic | A Gathering of Shadows | Vicious bookmarks (“Vicious inspired”) | ADSoM bookmarks (“A Darker Shade of Magic Inspired”)| England bookmarks (“London”)

I am aware there are like five books in this photo, but the ones I bought were the UK editions of ADSoM and AGoS at the bottom. I did read them already and I have reviews for both of those on this blog, which you can read here and here respectively. I bought the UK editions because I’ve been eyeing them for a while now (like since last year with ADSoM). ADSoM was originally $25 dollars last year but it was only $7. So yeah. Gosh, these sales… 😛

I’ve heard such beautiful things about Raw Blue. Also thanks to all the Aussie bloggers in the blogosphere, I’ve been inspired to read a book written by an Australian author for some time now. The only one I’ve read so far is The Fairy Wren.

So I read The Anatomical Shape of a Heart last year and really enjoyed it, so I thought I’d buy the finished copy in the UK edition, Night Owls. I have no idea why titles are different but I prefer both the UK cover and name more.

Amazon

So I had this awful (well, actually, good) realization that physical books are actually really cheap on Amazon (especially if they’re paperback). So I started buying a couple. I bought the Shiver trilogy because I’ve wanted these books years ago when I started high school and couldn’t afford them. I love how the text inside matches the color of the covers, which is very cool! And I got The Winner’s Crime and The Winner’s Kiss because I was marathoning the series mid-March and early April. (You guys wouldn’t believe how difficult it was for me to get my hands on The Winner’s Crime. Three local bookstores were sold out where I lived. A lot of people must have been marathoning the series seeing as the last book was going to come out soon at the time.) I have a review for The Winner’s Crime here. And I’m currently working on a review on the final installment. I loved it though! And I got the other books because I’ve been recommended them in the past and they were relatively cheap.

School Text (Textbooks Not Pictured)

Basically all the assigned text I had for this semester. (I had more (Medea, Hippolytus, and Bacchae) but I ended borrowing them from the library instead. Also, I decided not to show my textbooks since those are pretty boring anyway.) And I already have full reviews from some of them! I’ll link them here: The Homeric Hymns review, The Iliad review, The Aeneid review, Metamorphoses reviewMetamorphoses was by far my favorite of them all.

POP! fUNKOS

IMG_4058

Mulan | Peasant Belle | The Beast | Severus Snape | Harry Potter | Batman | Sherlock with Apple

So after my Eren Jaeger from Attack on Titan Pop! Funko I was like “I need all my favorite characters.” Hence the splurge. I also got the Severus Snape one on January 14th, the day Alan Rickman passed away. #RIPAlanRickman #Always

I’m not sure if any of you guys can tell but my current blog banner (and even the one I had before that many months ago) is from Howl’s Moving Castle because that is my FAVORITE Studio Ghibli production. Since I noticed Vivi already created some Studio Ghibli bookmarks for some others as custom orders. I had to put in a request for myself. And I am in love! ❤

Harry Potter bookmarks

People probably have mistaken me as a Happy Hello Art rep (on Instagram) or think I’m being sponsored… but nope! I just went a little crazy with magnetic bookmarks ever since I was introduced to them. Some of these I even bought two sets of because I wanted to give my friends some as well. Like I said early in the post, you can get these all at the Happy Hello Art Etsy shop. Vivi, the shop owner is super kind and so talented. I even got a few custom made ones. The shipping is really fast; I highly recommend the shop. Feel free to enlarge the photos to see the bookmarks better. They’re all characters from popular YA titles or just cute images. Also, the teapot image (with the Howl’s Moving Castle book) I got that from my friend Savindi for my birthday. That one is from Crafted Van.

Adult Coloring Books

coloringbooks

Enchanted Forest | Fantastic Cities | Secret Tokyo

One of my good friends in real life gave me Enchanted Forest and after that I sort of was hooked. I ended up buying two other coloring books I’ve been eyeing for some time: Fantastic Cities and Secret Tokyo.

Electronic Books

All the e-books I got were on the Kindle Daily/Monthly Deals. Well aside from Iron to Iron. I knew I wanted to read that novella once it was released. And I did! It was wonderful. I still need to write a review on for it though. 😅

Audiobooks

As you all can see those were my stopping points before I switched over to reading the books on my own. Like I said, for A Little Life I only listened up to where I stopped reading back in November 2015 and ended up enjoying the story on my own. But the narrator for that one is simply fantastic. His voice is so soothing-the kind that is nice to listen to not the one that makes you go to sleep, haha. (And haha, I used Audible for like a month and then ended up canceling my membership. Listening to books weren’t exactly my thing. )

ARCs and Review Copies

Here are the electronic and physical review copies I received these past few months. Because of school I’ve been really behind, and I haven’t been requesting any (aside from RisukoEligible, and Summer Days and Summer Days (I’m actually part of the blog tour for that one so I’ll have a post up soon!)). Most were just unsolicited copies; and I won When We Collided in a Goodreads giveaway. (I was 1/5,000. I still can’t believe it! As I’ve mentioned in the past, I tend to not bother with giveaways since the odds are never in my favor for giveaways…) Anyway, I have reviews for a few books from this section.  Almost Midnight can be read here. I also was part of the St. Martin’s Griffin blog tour for In Real Life and you can that review and post here. I’ve also read The Vegetarian which gave me Brave New World, strange vibes. I didn’t like it and I’ll be composing a review for that one soon as well. I’ve been slugging through The New Guy and Other Senior Year Distractions and I’m not really liking it so far, unfortunately. Anyways… I just want to say a quick thank you to all the publishers that sent me these!

Oh man, well we’ve finally made it to the end! (Now you guys know why I’ve been putting this post off, haha.) Anyway, I hope you found this post kind of amusing. Let me know what you have read and think I should add to my priority TBR pile! Until next time! 😀

OMGGGGGG!! This is an explosive post!! Gaaah… I’m so jelous! But this is really awesome! I sooo wish Book Outlet or Book Depository was available in India, it would have been great but here I’m limited only to Amazon. It’s great but I wish I had more options and those funkos are extremely costly here. sad face Though I’m going to have them… one day! I really need to get out of mt broke-ish situation so that I can go back to book buying though I did order two books today! Nonetheless GREAT HAUL! 😀

Thanks, Poulami! ^.^ Aww, I totally wish I could send you some Pop! Funkos then! Gosh, I wish BO wasn’t so expensive to ship internationally… A lot of readers seem to have that problem. And wait, Book Depository doesn’t ship to India? I’m sorry for the limited options. 😥

Nah it doesn’t! But I hope it starts in the future! Well Amazon has funkos but they are almost the cost of 3-4 books so you know which option I chose! But I do hope I can buy them in the near future.

To be honest, they all sit in their jar screaming, “Summer! Pick me up!” Though to answer you question: I only use Jem. Occasionally, I will take out my purple unicorn (the one that I bought when you told me Crafted Van had a free shipping sale) as well.
AND OMG, YOU NEED TO GET KESTREL AND ARIN. When I got them I was so thinking, “Carolyn, needs these in her life…” 😛

Heh. I know, I’m such a monster. (I’ve gotten better lately though. Mainly because I’m borderline broke having not worked recently and just bought a new ereader. Unfortunately, the electronic doesn’t come in until July, which sort of sucks. 😮 )

Whoa! Great haul! And gorgeous pictures!

I’ve been trying to avoid the Book Outlet. It’s just so cheap and so tempting, and I need to step away and just go to the library. :p

To be honest, I’ve started double stacking my shelves so that there are two rows of books.

Thank you, Lauren! I have a feeling it’s going to take me a super long time to read all these seeing as I only read 4-5 books a month, sigh.

WOWZAS! Your right, this is a monster of a book haul! But look at all the beautiful books you purchased! ❤ The cheap paperbacks on Amazon is solely the reason why I don’t shop in bookshops anymore but I know I should! I can’t decide between the UK paperback of the Unexpected Everything or the Hardcover _
Can’t wait to hear what you think of Perks; I love that edition you got! Tbh I want all the Perks covers 😀 Hope you enjoy the Losing It series. I was going to read the first book but I just never got round to it! Since we started talking about NA books, I plan to start with a classic Colleen Hoover at some point XD Love all the bookmarks you brought! They’re so cute. Hope you enjoy reading all these books!

I know, my book buying obsession has really gotten out of hand… I mean look at how many copies of TID I now have. #noregrets Thank you!

Gosh, this comment is so late… but it looks like you went with the paperback of The Unexpected Everything. It looks so fab on Instagram. 🙂 And me too (about looking forward to Perks)! I know that you really enjoyed that book. And hehe, we should buddy read a NA book together some time this summer (if we’re both feeling it-as in in the mood). Unteachable was pretty bad for me… but hopefully a CoHo will make me a convert. Who knows! XD And thanks so much!

Aww I bet it looks nice on your shelf though! 😉 Thanks! I hope I made the right choice with the paperback 😀 I think the hardcover is really pretty with the ice cream van in the background though ❤ That’s a good idea about buddy reading – I remember you mentioned it a while back. I pre-ordered It Ends With Us by CoHo! Its released on 2nd August 😉 Just in time for the summer as well. Maybe we could buddy read that one? haha I think CoHo is either a hit or miss, some people like her books and some…don’t 😛 I did enjoy Never Never though – still need to read part 3! Your welcome 🙂

I’ve heard so much about Summer of Chasing Mermaids, I can’t wait to pick that one up! That infernal devices set looks absolutely STUNNING! And YESSSSS I’m so happy you picked up all those Patrick Ness books, you know I absolutely devoured the Chaos Walking trilogy! This is a super epic book haul Summer and I’m glad you ended up sharing it with us!

Gosh, you really need to pick up The Summer of Chasing Mermaids this summer, Jeann! There’s so many good things about that novel (sex positive vibes, cute relationship, great supporting cast, etc). AND actually, I think I ordered those books because of your reviews and “reasons you should pick up the Chaos Walking trilogy” post. They’re so think though, but i’m going to read them someday for sure!

Oh my gosh summer, this post actually made me tear up a little bit – as you know by how much I read and update Goodreads, I am obsessed with books and this post really fed that obsession, so thank you. At first I was like “dang, mad respect to Summer for gathering all of these books in such a short amount of time, wow” and then I reminded myself of the post’s title and was like “still, mad respect to Summer for gathering all of these books in just a few months.” Love your careful assortment of the books in the pictures as well as how you laid them out within this post. Also, my two favorites are A Little Life and Me Before You, coincidentally both audiobooks. Hope your reading has been going well and thank you for running such a meaningful and stylish blog!

This comment made me laugh. I feel like a monster every time I post a book haul (I literally have no control when it comes to online shopping. You’d think I’d be more careful being a college student, but no. Maybe that explains why I have to work so much. Anyways, I’m totally digressing…) But thanks, Thomas! Happy to hear that you can appreciate the photos. I try to explain to my friends (that don’t read) that I need to have photoshoots for my books but they just never get it. :3 And aww, thank you! Happy reading to you as well. 🙂

DAAAMNNN THAT’S A LOT OF BOOKS!!
This is such a beautiful collection and thanks to your creative photographing ideas, it looks all the more tempting.
You’ve actually become my ‘prospective-books-to-buy-and-hopefully-a-review’ blog. Whenever I have to buy books, I come here 😀 😀
The sad thing in that is that where I live, there aren’t any bookstores in proximity so most of the time I order online (Amazon) and I’m not permitted beyond six books :/ It pains me because it makes me, literally, ecstatic reading different books and adding them to my collection.
I almost, a little bit, envy you 😛 Great collection though.

Glad to hear that I’ve become one of your reliable sources on book buying recommendations, haha. But I’m sorry to hear that you don’t have a great selection for bookstores around your area though. They need to fix that!
      Thanks, Akanksha! 😀
