Book Haul: May 2016

May 2016 Book Haul

Hello! Today I’m back with yet another book haul post. I know, I know. My book haul last month did say it included May but honestly I only mentioned that because some things arrived in early May when really they were all older purchases from previous months. Therefore, this post is technically the real deal! I bought eleven books last month and two sets of bookmarks. I also requested two review copies from Netgalley.

Click pictures* to enlarge for a closer look. All bookmarks are created and sold by Happy Hello Art on Etsy. And links will take you to Goodreads.

*Disclaimer: Don’t worry, no books were thrown, dropped, or hurt for these photos. (I just wanted to try the “floating” concept.)

To be honest, I know absolutely nothing about this Erika Johansen series. However, I have this awful pit feeling it’s a generic YA fantasy from the reviews I have read. But I couldn’t resist hauling book two (even when I haven’t read book one) because these covers and spines are so stunning.

I know I keep saying this… but I am going to read The Wrath and the Dawn very soon. Well at least before school starts! If there is anyone that has not read this series… let me know if you’re willing to buddy read it with me! Because I’d totally love that!

I already own this installment of Bloodlines, but this was signed and under $5 at my local bookstore. Like why was it so cheap? I don’t understand how bargain books work. Aren’t signed editions always supposed to be more expensive??

This was an absolute impulse purchase (since I never even had this on my Goodreads TBR shelf) but I’m really disappointed… because it’s not one of the copies with the highlighted yellow/green tinted pages… Sigh. I guess I can’t expect much if I picked this up on sale at Book Outlet.

Okay, so, yes. Of course, I already own these books. I explained this on my Instragram, but for some reason the UK editions were in the bargain section of my local bookstore so I went ahead and just bought my third set of The Infernal Devices. The obsession is real. But I think they’re my favorite YA series of all time so… (The bookmarks are not part of the haul.)

Another impulse buy. I know nothing about this book aside from it being another sci-fi. The psychedelic cover is uber cool though.

Lady Midnight bookmarks (“Descendants of the Protectors”)

What type of Cassandra Clare fan am I to not have read Lady Midnight yet? #theshame 😔 I’ve been with Cassie Clare’s books since the release of City of Glass, and I’ve never failed starting shadowhunter books the day of their releases. So the fact that I haven’t began the first installment to The Dark Artifices is so sad. But I hope to start it soon!

The Great Gatsby bookmarks (“Mystery Set”)

(Lol, everyone on Instagram was commenting about my nails instead of the actual bookmarks. XD I can’t really blame them though. I’m really surprised how sparkly they came out in picture, lol. Sorry, that was so random, heh.) I read The Great Gatsby in high school and found it one of the better assigned readings but I didn’t love it either. However, I really, really, really want this gorgeous edition of the classic.

Both of these review copies will be perfect standalones to read for June because of Pride Month. I finished You Know Me Well last week and liked it. I’m extremely excited for The Art of Being Normal since that one’s generally received a lot of positive reviews so far. (Strangely they had it up for grabs on Netgalley; I’m guessing it was for the release of the paperback since it’s been published for a while now.)

And that’s a wrap! Lately, my posts have been shorter than usual mainly because I’ve been in and out of the hospital for some shots and titers. (I recently found out I’m no longer immune to Hepatitis B, which is required for fall’s school term, so I need to repeat the entire series. Sigh, of course my titer would come back negative…) But it’s nothing serious! I’ve also been somewhat busy with reviewing some summer pharmacy internships apps. I thought about applying for an summer internship but I think I’m going to stick with a school-free holiday this year. Anyway, everything hasn’t been fun stuff but still necessary for the incoming school year! Anyway, hope you all have been doing well! 🙂

Awkward moment when you read “Descendants of the Protectors” as “Descendants of the Sun” :’)
“of couse, my titer would come back negative” LOL you’re such a pharmacist already :p
And I’m still debating whether to read Queen of the Tearling. I feel like I’m going to be disappointed but the concept is so interesting.

Omg, lol! Oh, Carolyn. 😂 And hehe, that’s like the best compliment ever! :DDD But yeah, it’s just my luck that I’m no longer immune. All of my friends had positive titers. So envious. >.<

And haha, we could totally buddy read it… if you do decide to read The Queen of the Tearling. 😉

I am also yet to read Lady Midnight, Yaay I’m not the only one. High Five.
I haven’t read the Bloodlines series either, I loved Vampire Academy though. What did you rate it? (if you’ve read it yet) 😀

Hehe, you’re certainly not the only one. I was looking forward to Lady Midnight for so long… but (I can’t believe it) I haven’t been in the mood. And oh my gosh, I loved VA so much as well. To be honest, I wasn’t a fan of Bloodlines but they got better as the series progressed (I’m halfway through with the series-so I’m not completely done yet). But don’t let my opinion deter you from reading it. If you’re a fan of Adrian… well he makes a lot of appearances seeing as the series is about him and Sydney. 😉

Great haul. Enjoy reading all those books. I started “The Great Gatsby” long ago. I did not care for it and thus did not finish the book. Who knows maybe I will attempt to read it in the future. Those bookmarks are adorable. Thanks for sharing your haul.

Thanks so much, Marilyn! 🙂 I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one that wasn’t enchanted by The Great Gatsby. You should definitely pick it up someday when you feel ready though; the ending was more impactful than I was expecting!

I adored The Queen of the Tearling and really think you should give it a chance. It’s technically not even YA, but somehow got mixed up and was promoted as that. There’s just a few scenes where there’s either some strong language or a sex scene. And even though the baseline of it IS kind of generic, it really stands on it’s own as you read it. It’s heavy in the political aspect of this future world that recessed to old ways, and is super interesting. The second book is even better and definitely is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. I definitely recommend giving it a try! Strong mc + politically lush storyline gives it an A in my book 🙂

    Awesome haul!

Thank you for this comment, Mariah! You’ve certainly made me more excited for The Queen of the Tearling. I had no idea it was one of those YA/adult crossover type of books. I suppose it’s sort of like A Darker Shade of Magic where there’s a mix of YA and adult vibes. And so glad to hear you enjoyed the story! I’ll bump it up to my priority TBR shelf. 🙂

Ah yes, impulse buys, they control my life, too. Let me know what you think of Wolf in White Van though! I was initially interested in it but to be honest, I kind of forgot what it’s about… LOL. I hope you enjoy You Know Me Well! I just finished it a little over 2 days ago and highly enjoyed it :).

Glad to know I’m not alone, Jess! ^.^ Sure thing! I noticed that Wolf in White Van received generally positive reviews. Hehe, I actually read You Know Me Well already and really enjoyed it. There’s so much to love about that standalone. And, of course, yay for LGBT lit!

Can you be even more adorable?? You’re comments are so cute (idek why). This one totally made me laugh. XD

And thanks, Mariana! That really means a lot. For every book haul post I have to have this crazy photoshoot with my books (my friends and dad think I’m nuts-can’t blame them though; the things we do for our love of books). 😉

I think that you deserve a school free summer. You’ve earned it and those books are waiting for you haha. I have this terrible habit of buying the sequel to a series I’ve not even started yet purely because I want to have both books together and completed. I’m trying to break that habit now that I’m on this book buying ban.
Good news, my copy of More Happy Than Not has arrived and I also have an unread copy of The Wrath and the Dawn sat on my shelf.
Also I have some serous nail envy. SO SPARKLY!!!

Oh, Lois! T.T After scheduling this post I actually deleted all the application forms from my laptop, so fun summer it is! Thank you!

Same, I’m sort of scared of myself now. If I buy a first book in a new series I’m worried that the OCD tendencies in me will make me collect the entire series. This habit is really bad because I’ve mistaken a lot of series to be trilogies when they’re not. I originally thought The Chronicles of Nick were going to be like 3 books max, but man they’re like 6+ books. It also took me forever to collect the House of Night books (and, to be honest, I’ve lost interest in them-I really should have just given the installments I owned away back then). Anyway, I’m veering off topic… but yeah, I really need to calm down and start trying to break this habit as well. As for book buying bans… I’ve kind of… given up. I have absolutely no willpower. (Good thing I work a lot. Otherwise I’d be broke with the way I spend my money…)

AND HURRAH. If you don’t mind, maybe we could read MHTN sometime mid/late next week? I just really need to finish the books I’m currently reading before I start something else. 🙂 AND YAYAYY, I’d totally be down with reading The Wrath and the Dawn with you. Maybe after MHTN? MHTN is priority for me since it’s Pride Month. 😀

haha vent away. I always do impulse buys as well. Like The Maze Runner series was on offer and I decided to buy the entire box set and I have no real plans to read them.
Mid/End of the week would suit me just fine cause I want to finish This Savage Song before we start and I am all for a Wrath and the Dawn buddy read as well. 😀

Ooh I’m so jealous of this haul! So many books I want to get to. I really want to read The Queen of the Tearling, I feel like it’s one of those few books that I’d like despite the reviews. I loved The Wrath and the Dawn but I’m yet to read The Rose and the Dagger. If I get my hands on a copy soon maybe we could buddy read it? Hope you’re doing well! I’m glad to hear the hospital visits are nothing too serious ❤

Hehe, I think it all depends if I can read The Wrath and the Dawn in time. But I totally would love that (reading The Rose and the Dagger with you) if the timing works out. 🙂 And aww, thank you! ❤ That’s funny, I totally feel the same way about The Queen of the Tearling. I’m slightly wary but I have an awesome feeling about it, too. :3

A person cannot have too many copies of TiD! I just bought the boxset of the new covers last week and they’re on their way! So excited to have them on my shelf next to my other Shadowhunter books. I just ordered the new TID bookmark from HappyHelloCo! Except I just missed out on the remaining Disney bookmarks. I was so devastated because they were still available when I was on my way to uni but were sold out as soon as I got to my computer T_T

Aww, I’ve missed you so much, Thuong! To be honest, (you could already probably tell) but I haven’t been blogging or visiting other people’s blogs as of late because of my crazy schedule… So you’re not the only one that needs to catch up, haha. And omg, that’s awesome. I’m really looking forward to The DUFF seeing as I have really bad luck with high school themed reads lately. LOL. Thanks for understanding me (with my TID purchase); I really couldn’t help it. Thanks, Thuong! 😀
