I’m always going on and on about K-pop (probably Exo specifically), and I noticed that I rarely talk about girl groups for some reason. So in honor of International Women’s Day I thought I would share the top 20 K-pop girl group songs I’ve listened to the most. I won’t be talking about each track because that would be quite redundant, but I will say that if I had to choose favorites… Taeyeon, F(X), and Spica are the most consistent artists in that I normally like all their releases.
Oh and a brief history of me and K-pop (if you’re curious and/or new to this blog)… I started listening to Korean pop music when I was in high school (about late 2011). And I believe the biggest reason why I haven’t outgrown the musical genre and still listen to it to this day is because of the great stage presence these idols have. They train at a young age and for many years before they can debut. (Actually the K-pop industry like many music industries anywhere around the world are pretty cutthroat and unstable.) During that time, they learn a variety of skills including singing, dancing, variety sense and humor, languages, etc. Their live performances are always so phenomenal due to the thorough lessons they had as trainees. And for that reason, I have huge respect for these idols and truly think they’re are on a whole other level compared to other international artists. Haha, so that’s my short spiel.
Anyway, without further ado, here’s the list. They’re in the order from most listened to least listened to. But even the least listened to… have been listened to many times seeing as this is only 20 songs out of thousands I have on my iTunes. (Yes, my music listening is no joke.) Lastly, keep in mind some of these releases are pretty old because, well, I did begin listening to this genre of music 5+ years ago. XD
I know, this is such a different post considering that I’m mainly a book blogger… but I had the urge to create it. I’m a strong believer that it’s important that a blogger recognizes his/her’s target audience but I also think it’s equally important for that blogger to publish whatever he or she wants in the process. Yes! you included Taeyeon and Jessica hehe! My favorite girl group will always be Apink considering I sort of introduced to Kpop through them and I’ve liked almost all of their songs.

I didn’t know that! I’m not really a fan of Apink but when I think of girl groups with cute concepts I always immediately think of them. I do like “Luv” and “Only One” by them though.

I don’t you if you’ve tried but TRY Oh My Girl’s “Closer”. It should’ve become a massive hit if it wasn’t for the fact that girls are very less-known, and are from a small company (although B1A4 do relatively well in the industry)

AH, WELL THANK YOU! I HAPPILY ACCEPT YOUR LOVE. Haha. Those three are so underrated, especially Spica. In fact, it’s been a really long time since I’ve heard of that group; they aren’t promoted by their company enough.
I love Oh My Girl’s “Closer!” Now that’s a song that doesn’t get nearly enough recognition as it deserves!

Spica recently ended their contract with B2M, so informally they’re disbanded; but the girls themselves say that Spica as a band didn’t end, but they will search for their own agencies. Probably they’re trying to go the 2AM way.

K-pop is an addictive abyss to fall into once you’ve tried a couple of songs! I’m more interested in the boy groups though (for obvious reasons, haha) and would suggest you trying some of that out first!

Wonderful post, Summer! Glad you included that comment about how the K-Pop industry can be cutthroat and unstable. I find K-Pop so fascinating. Even though I’m not as into it as I used to be, I still find the focus on cultivating a very specific type of appearance a bit troubling. Like, have you seen this news about a woman who was going to debut with SNSD? http://www.asianjunkie.com/2016/02/19/stella-kim-who-was-almost-an-snsd-member-talks-about-her-time-in-korea/
However, I don’t think all K-Pop groups and singers experience this, and there are a lot of empowering songs out there (I am partial to f(x) as well.) It makes me happy that you’ve been able to enjoy this music for so long while also having a complex understanding of the industry and its underpinnings – I’ve always liked the girl groups more than the guys for some reason, ah ha.

I can sort of relate. I was super obsessed with K-pop when I was in high school, especially in 10th and 11th grade, but my love for the genre has digressed since then.
The entire process of becoming a Korean idol is very interesting to me as well. I also find it unique that the trainee and audition system is not really kept a secret. It seems like many Koreans are familiar with it (and even international fans like me).

After rewatching what Stella Kim has to share… I’m still horrified of the body shaming and privation that some of these young aspiring idols have to go through. And to think that they may never get to debut despite the hardships they endure with some of these companies is also terrible. Not to mention the uncertainty of succeeding in such an industry is always a question, too. Clearly, I could go on and on about this subject…
But I agree, I’m sure that not all of them go through training periods like that (thankfully). But I do think pursuing a career in art and entertainment will forever be challenging. XD

I’m so happy so many of my favorite artists were also on this list! To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of girlgroups – or female characters or female authors… For a long time, I felt bad for myself for not appreciating girls as I thought I should. But, now, I understand that I don’t have to love a bunch of female authors/artists in order to appreciate them.
My favorite girlgroups are definitely F(X) and Red Velvet. I think they’re very versatile artists and their dance performances are my favorite. I love watching dance moves (it is my favorite thing about KPOP artists, actually) and I find them pretty awesome.

^I really love this statement because I can 100% relate. (Though I do differ in that I’ve always gravitated towards women authors.)
I’m glad that you like F(X). Of the SM artists I think they’re the most underrated. I actually learned of them after I saw Victoria, their leader, appear on We Got Married. She had such a lovable and mature personality.
Dancing clearly is something that appeals to me, too. I’ve always thought that the K-pop choreographies are the extra element that makes Korean idols’ performances spectacular and unique. I wish other countries had more of their artists dancing, haha.

I’m not exactly into Kpop, but I really love BIGBANG! As for girl group, I usually listen to 2NE1 and BLACKPINK. I seem like such a YG stan 😀 My favorite song from 2NE1 is lonely, while BLACKPINK is playing with fire. What’s yours? Also, I tend to find new songs while watching k-dramas, their soundtracks are great!

BIGBANG is such an iconic K-pop group since they’re so popular worldwide and have released so many hit songs. Haha, I’m not really a fan of 2NE1 though. I like their badass concepts but their songs are a hit or miss for me musically. I am, however, a huge fan of BLACKPINK so far. “I Love You” would be my favorite 2NE1 song and I’m in between “Playing with Fire” and “Whistle” for BLACKPINK.
Ah, I love that you mentioned that! I also find the best Korean songs from OSTs. My favorite OSTs are definitely from Goblin, Healer, and It’s Okay, That’s Love. Since all three also feature international artists that sing in English, which is really cool.

Ooh, you should check some songs out then! I haven’t listened to much J-Pop… but I like a lot of J-Rock. Or mostly just One Ok Rock, haha.
