Goodbye 2017 + 2018 Resolutions + 3 Year Blog Anniversary + Giveaway

Edit 1/28/18: I’m so sorry, guys, I haven’t had a chance to reply to the comments on this post and choose the giveaway winner just yet. I promise to do it by the 2nd of February at the latest though. Thanks for understanding!

Happy 2018, friends! It feels strange typing this because where did 2017 go? Last year was totally a blur to me. XD

From the title, it’s safe to assume that I’ll be packing a lot in this one post. I’ve been so out of blogging that I completely forgot how it’s tradition for me to post a lot in the beginning of the year (with my new year resolutions post, blogiversary post, monthly recap, etc). I guess I lost track of time and didn’t account for all that, so I’m going to have to settle with a long post this time around instead.

Believe it or not, today marks three years of blogging for me! I started Xingsings on January 2, 2015 and, to be honest, I never thought that it would be around for this long. Anyway, I want to sincerely say thank you all for the love and support that I’ve gotten over the years. I’ve met so many wonderful people and created irreplaceable friendships through this platform. I really could not be more grateful.

While on this subject, I should share my decision on whether I want to continue this blog or not since I did promise an answer to this. After talking to some close friends of mine (both from the blogosphere and outside of it), I think I might continue after all. (Man, I feel like this “should I or shouldn’t I?” debate pops up every year around this time for me and I always decide to go on.)

I should also mention that the biggest factor that made me consider quitting the blog in the first place. I’m not going to lie, my lack of replying to comments and blog hopping last year made me feel horrible. When I think about how little I interacted with other bloggers it made me feel very guilty. I don’t know how to describe it but I felt underserving of the response I got towards my posts.  I’m not encouraging or saying that I have a “comment for comment” mentality exactly but I genuinely like keeping up with friends that keep up with me and I felt bad when I couldn’t.

Anyway, 2018 is going to be the year where I want to change this. Another one of my new year’s resolutions is actually to just blog more in general. Somehow, I’ve managed to at least blog once a month since the beginning of this blog but I want to go back to writing more book reviews because that’s probably the part I miss the most about book blogging, aside from the blog hopping and interacting with others.

Speaking of book blogging… I think it’s time for me to shift my focus away from being just a book blog. My main focus will probably still and always be about books, but I’m ready to expand the non-bookish side of Xingsings this year, by incorporating posts like product reviews (like my bookish/literary candles), more Asian drama and anime/manga reviews, and maybe even some planner/hobonichi/bullet journaling and crafting posts. I guess whatever inspires me!

I know in the years past I’ve “reviewed” and reflected the previous years goal’s, but I sort of failed epically in the reading and blogging portions of my 2017 resolutions. (Actually, the only portion I did seem to fulfill completely was the career/academic aspirations. But, I suppose this isn’t a bad thing since those were the most important.) Therefore, I won’t be doing a reflection on last year’s goals in this blog post. :’)

And that’s really all I have to share with this post for now. I have book reviews, a long overdue book haul, and a December wrap up in the works so until those posts, see you next time! 🙂

This year’s giveaway will be simple! To win a $25 voucher to a bookstore of your choice (can be Book Depository, Book Outlet, Books a Million, or Barnes and Noble) just make sure you’re following this blog and leave a comment about your new year’s resolution(s) if you have any down below! If you don’t have any resolutions, let me know of your plans for the new year instead. I will pick a winner on my birthday, January 22, 2018. (And yes, open internationally as long as Book Depository ships to you.)

[I feel like after my long absence from the blogosphere there are going to be, like, only two comments. XD But I guess that means you have a 50/50 chance of winning, ahaha.]

Congrats on 3 years Summer! I’m excited to see where Xingsings goes, with you expanding out of the book blog bubble. 🙂 I totally understand what you said about feeling bad about not blog hopping/interacting with bloggers cos I feel the same. I’ve been a terrible blogger this year so my resolutions are to blog more regularly and interact with the blogosphere more!
Happy new year! I hope 2018 goes fantastic 😁

Happy blog anniversary, Summer!! I am so, so happy to hear that you will keep on blogging this year. Even if you haven’t been blogging actively all year, I am always really happy to see and read one of your latest blog posts, to catch up with what you have been up to and overall, that you haven’t given up on this. We have been blogging for around the same time and, well… I would be crushed without you. No pressure. Hahaha, honestly though, it wouldn’t be the same without you around. All of this to say, you are the best and I am so happy we met and I LOVE YOU ❤
I am so excited for all of your resolutions, obviously to read more blog posts from you, but also more things about planning, bullet journaling and crafts overall. I love these kind of posts!
Thank you so, so much for hosting such a lovely giveaway, Summer, you are the sweetest! ❤ My new year resolutions are to be less stressed out about blogging in general, take better care of myself, to try and not let the hype influence me too much when it comes to books. I also really want to figure things out in my life, but… that’s just something to hope for, haha 🙂
All the best for 2018, Summer! Sending you all the love and hugs xx

Congratulations on your 3rd blogiversary, I believe my 2nd is coming up however I haven’t been very good at sticking to my blog properly for the past two years, although I know this year will be different and I will post throughout not just at the beginning and the end! So you can say that is one of my resolutions, I’m also going to be saving a lot of money to move out with my partner, reads lots of books and learn to cook and bake more! Happy New Year! ☺️

    3. Buy a bookshelf! (Sadly I don’t have one! 😦 )
    4. Complete my GoodReads Goal
    5. Start my Bachelor’s Degree !!!

That’s too much but yes!! I’ve planned this year to be a revolutionary one!!! 😉

Congratulation on the anniversary and I’m glad you decided to continue the blog. I’m curious to see your post regarding bullet journaling. It’s something I find very interesting even if I don’t have the skills to do it. xD

My resolution, blog wise, is to focus more on books and writing. I feel it it might inspire me to be more consistent on my projects.

Congratulations on your third blog anniversary, Summer! It’s great to have you back. I’ve been pretty inactive in the blogging community myself because my mental health was wearing me thin, so I decided to dedicate my limited energy towards my studies (as you said, they’re the most important). I also felt really guilty about how little my online presence has been, so one of my resolutions is to comment more!

    My other resolutions are:

    Read at least 48 books
Watch at least 1 Filipino film per month
Write 2 book reviews per week
Get a GWA of 1.35 or better
Try to learn one new thing

Here’s to a better year ahead! Happy New Year, Summer!

  7. SERIESous Book Reviews says:

    Happy 3 years! That’s amazing!

I’m glad your career/academic aspiration goals were met for 2017 🙂 I remember being in those shoes a few years ago and it was a very stressful (albeit rewarding in the end) time.

One of my resolutions for 2018 reading wise is to read some sequels! I want to read at least one sequel novel a week for the entire year. And as always, I want to read some of those books I’ve bought over the years…

  8. Lois says:

I sooo get what you mean about the blogging guilt thing. I’ve been so inactive in terms of blog hopping and commenting the past couple months and I feel so, so guilty about it.

I think it’s definitely a good idea to branch out and talk about other interests. I’ve always said I don’t want to be defined just by the books and this year I’m hoping to post some non-bookish content as well. I think having a variety and trying new ideas is a great way to keep things fresh and instill a rejuvenated excitement to blogging, at least, that’s what I’m hoping it’ll do.

You already know I’ve decided to take the planner life path this year and so far I’m doing well haha. I keep forgetting to ask you, but I need some sticker inspiration and I have no idea where to begin, so send me your best recs.

I tend not to do resolutions, mainly because I forget about them by the end of the year, but I do want to focus on myself a bit more and learn to appreciate myself cause I’m literally my own worst enemy sometimes. I also want to push my boundaries and challenge myself. Reading wise, I have no goals, it’s less pressure then haha.

Hope 2018 has been kind to you so far, Summer. ❤ 😀

Summer! I’m so happy to hear that you’ve decided to continue blogging. Honestly, it was a question I asked myself too this year after I went 10 months without posting, but I think if it’s something you really enjoy, it’s always good to persevere. I can’t wait to read any future posts you come up with (as I always enjoy reading your posts), and your expansion to things like craft sounds like a whole lotta fun.
My resolutions this year are also to blog more, try to get more organised, and start to transition to being an adult more now that I’m 18. I hope you have a wonderful 2018 ❤

Hi, Liam! I’m happy to hear that you’ve returned! I actually read your post about why you took your hiatus and how the blogging community isn’t quite the same as it used to be, but, sadly, I never had the chance to write a comment. And I love your resolutions! Mine are pretty much the same. I turned 22 last month and I still feel like I need to get used to adulting, haha. :’)

Anyway, I hope that you’ve had a good start of 2018 so far! And happy February! ❤

Also, you’re actually the winner for my giveaway! So just shoot me an email at and let me know where you want the $25 voucher to be. If it’s Book Depository… because they don’t have e-certificates, just choose any book(s) (or whatever you want) up to $25 and send me links to those pages so that I make sure I order the correct editions. Don’t forget to include your mailing address in that email as well. 🙂

I’m glad to hear that adulting takes many years to conquer. That gives me a little time to still be a child on the inside!
Oh wow! Thank you so much Summer, that’s crazy XD Yes, it will be Book Depository. I’ll start doing some research to see what books I’d like, then get in contact with you.
Once again, happy 3 year blogiversary, I’m so happy you’ll still be around here on your blog. I hope your 2018 has started off well too ❤

My new year’s resolutions are to spend more time with my family and pressure myself less with schoolwork.
Thank you so so much for the giveaway! If I was lucky enough to win, please contact me on twitter at @WordsThatStay1 ❤

    Happy blogoversary, Summer!
I’ve been absent on blogosphere for the past eight months, but it’s a new year, so I felt inspired to come back, revisit my favorite blogs and catch up. I don’t think I’ll be moving on with my own blog, because school keeps me from posting as consistently as I’d like, but I still want to check on other peoples’ work. I definitely understand the struggle on “should I continue or should I not”, but I really, really hope you do!
I follow you on Instagram and watch all your Instagram stories, so I’m definitely aware of your candle obsession, and I’d love to see you talking about it more, as well as your manga/drama recommendations, hahaha. Even though we already get a little bit of it daily in the instagram stories, I would not complain to read entire blog posts on it.
Now as far as my New Year’s resolutions go, I decided not to have any. For 2017, I created a long list, and ended up completing a total of none, which made me very disappointed at myself. 2017 was such a bad year for me, and I believe it has to do with the amount of pressure I put on myself, therefore for 2018, I decided to begin with a clean slate, no huge commitments. I do want to achieve things, but I hope it is because I feel passionate and motivated to do so, not to just cross things off a list.
Anyway, I hope you have a fantastic 2018! And sorry for the loooong comment, hahah. Bad habits die hard!

  12. Ayunda says:

Congratulations on your Blogoversary!!! Here’s to more success and wonderful blog posts for the next three years ❤ I can’t wait to read non-bookish stuff from you, as you (maybe don’t) know my blog also posts non-bookish stuff, especially travel and movies because those two are basically how I spend all my money :”)
I have several reading goals in 2018, and I will definitely post my goals in my own blog in the future! Other than a handful of specific books I’d like to read this year, I would really like to read more audiobooks and read more non-fiction! Personal goals-wise, I am really looking forward to exploring Eastern Europe in the summer with my family ❤

Oh, my… I remember reading your handwritten letter for your 2nd blogiversary, and it feels like it was just yesterday! How is it possible that we’re now celebrating the third year of the blog?! CONGRATULATIONS, Summer! ❤ ❤ I wish you nothing but the best for this new year, and I hope you continue going on with the blog every time you think about quitting 🙂 As long as you enjoy this, don’t give up on this amazing bookish place! Don’t be so hard on yourself about not commenting back, we all know you read our comments! And post about the things that YOU love – I’d LOVE to read reviews of literary candles, btw! Best of luck with your resolutions for this 2018!
I actually have plenty of resolutions for this year, and most of them have to do with me. Yes. I’ve been dealing with a lot of anxiety lately, something that has taken me away from the things I used to do and enjoy, like reading and writing. This is a daily struggle, I’m aware of that, but I’m planning on put my focus on books, which are the ones that have been with me the whole time. I want to read more, I want to blog about the books that I read, I want to be part of this amazing bookish community that has shown me nothing but respect and love. So… Big deal, uh? Taking care of myself ❤ Probably the most important resolution of my life.

Once again, congratulations on three years of blogging, lovely! And seizeing the celebration moment… It is now the 22nd, which means… HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GIRL!!!!!!!! Hope you have a fantastic day with your loved ones, and all your dreams come true! ❤ ❤
