The Ultimate Book Tag

Screen Shot 2015-04-03 at 10.38.25 PMSo I’m kind of an obsessive, impulsive list-maker (anyone else?), and have realized my list of tags I’ve been tagged in is getting out of hand. So I should probably start spamming you all with these miscellaneous posts before the list gets any more monstrous! I was tagged by Joey (he cool, cheque him) to explore The Ultimate (is it really the ultimate one though?) Book Tag!

Now onto the tag!

1. Do you get sick while reading in the car?
Not at all! When I was younger most of my reading was done in the car when my dad would pick me to and from school, and even when I took the bus!

2. Which author’s writing style is completely unique to you and why?
I’d say Faulkner. Or Shakespeare. Or Catullus. Shakespeare pretty much made his own literature. And the only novel I’ve read by Faulkner was As I Lay Dying, which had so much stream of consciousness I was terribly confused at times. And I took Latin for 4 years, and to this day Catullus’s poetry in Latin is ridiculous (I mean most Roman poets ignored spelling/grammar to meet the meter at times, but this guy practically disregarded all rules)!

3. Harry Potter Series or the Twilight Saga? Give 3 points to defend your answer.
I read Twilight when I was in middle school, and liked it then. So I’m not a total Twilight fan or hater. But, of course, Harry Potter beats Twilight!

Because for obvious reasons:

1. I like the writing better
2. There’s magic
3. One word: Hogwarts

4. Do you carry a book bag? If so, what is in it (besides books)?
Is this supposed to be like Youtube gurus’ “What’s in My Bag” but for book bloggers? Anyway, I have the usual boring school stuff like a calculator, notebooks, pens, etc. I also never leave without my wallet and headphones.

5. Do you smell your books?
Not usually. I do like the smell of new books though, and I find the smell of bookstores divine (smell of books+brewing coffee=heaven).

6. Books with or without little illustrations.
I tend to like them in high/epic fantasies, like with illustration of kingdoms or maps. And it’s kind of a must in manga or graphic novels (so in those too).

7. What book did you love while reading but discovered later it wasn’t quality writing?
I have a lot of those since I started to read later in my childhood. Twilight is one of them. And other ya paranormal books that featured insta-love or love pentagons.

8. Do you have any funny stories involving books from your childhood? Please share!
Not really. I have an interesting but unfortunate fact though: My copy of HP and the Order of Phoenix made a great tumble down a flight of stairs when I was in middle school. It still pains me to this day to look at it.

9. What is the tinniest book on your shelf?
I actually answered this on last month’s Exploring My Bookshelves post. Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men.

10. What is the thickest book on your shelf?
This too was covered in the post mentioned above. Definitely Hugo’s Les Miserables.

11. Do you write as well as read? Do you see yourself in the future as being an author?
The most writing I do is for this blog and school. I think it’s fun, but I don’t have a great aptitude for it. I’ve never seen myself as an author. I think I enjoy reading the works of others more. It’s less work. XD

12. When did you get into reading?
2007, when HP and the Deathly Hallows was released.

13. What is your favourite classic book?
It’s between Steinbeck’s East of Eden or Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

14. In school what was your best subject Language Arts/English?
Wait, what? I don’t quite understand this question… If it’s asking me what my best subject was. It’s pretty much the sciences, physics to be specific.

15. If you were given a book as a present that you had read before and hated, what would you do?
I’d kindly accept it, and probably give it to someone who hasn’t read it and would enjoy it.

16. (Apparently Question 16 was supposed to be here, but now it’s disappeared?)

17. What is a bad habit you always do (besides rambling) while blogging?
Overall, I’d consider my blog a book blog… but so far, there’s so few reviews (I swear I do like to read, I just have a hard time to do so with school) and so many tags/memes. Oh well.

18. What is your favorite word?
Pandemonium or ephemeral.

19. Are you a nerd, dork, or dweeb? Or all of the above?
Is it bad I don’t know what dweeb means? I think I’m a nerd.

20. Vampires or Fairies? Why?
Vampires are cool, but so far, all the vampire series I’ve read have been quite unoriginal (the vampire is beautiful, lures prey, prey falls in love with said vampire, and forbidden love is born). I’d say fairies, they can be considered ethereal and kind or wicked and dark.

21. Shapeshifters or Angels? Why?
Angels. I don’t really have a reason other then there are a certain race of humans with angel blood called shadowhunters in the fictional world. And I think they’re cool and total badbutts.

22. Spirits or Werewolves? Why?
I don’t really care for either?

23. Zombies or Vampires? Why?
Uhh. I don’t know.

24. Love Triangle or Forbidden Love?
Neither if possible. But if I had to choose, I rather read about the love triangle than the forbidden love. I’ve had enough of Romeo and Juliet, thank you.

25. And finally: Full on romance books or action-packed with a few love scenes mixed in?
The action with some romance book option! (And why is there 22 questions? That’s a weird place to stop…) Update 4/4/15: I totally butchered the number on my original post.

I tried to find all the book bloggers I followed that read fantasy/paranormal/young adult books since a lot of the questions pertain to those readers more. And I also limited (I know it doesn’t seem like I did) to tagging blogs that have one owner/blogger to make this simpler…

    Cool list. 🙂 Can I add one? Flat out: What’s your favorite paranormal creature? Here’s another, too: What’s your favorite paranormal power? I usually lean toward different forms of psychic abilities. Time travel might top them all for me though. 🙂

      I’d pick faeries! In children fantasies, fairies were more like magical and sweet suger plum pixies, while in ya paranormal books they’re portrayed as wicked and dark fae. I think the versatility of how the race can be interpreted is cool. I love a good fairy/fae story. What about you? And ooh, time travel sounds nifty! As for a power… I’d either choose teleportation or reading minds (haha, stealing Edward Cullen’s ability). 😉

    Faulkner is definitely unique though I was really frustrated reading one of his books. And as common as love triangles are nowadays especially in Young Adult books when at times it’s totally unnecessary, I’d definitely pick it over forbidden love as well, though neither pleases me. I can only tolerate love triangles when it’s done right.

      Yes, Faulkner’s works isn’t exactly on the top of my favorite classics list. And I agree, but well constructed love triangles are rare. I hate when love triangles suddenly become pentagons or some other ridiculous polygon.

    I kind of hate authors who do love triangles when they had to make the not-right guy the bad one in the end to justify the scene. And wow you’re into Physics! I like math and sciences except that, my weakness. 😀

    I kind of just stumbled onto your blog through Seriesous Book Reviews and it was super awesome to discover your responses to Joey’s tag! I have to do my responses as well! I don’t think I’ve ever read Faulkner’s work, but yay for discovering someone who has studied Latin! I studied it for three years as well (I’ve probably forgotten most of it now, but it was one of my favourite classes!). I think my favourite science was Chemistry in High School, sadly Physics and I were just not meant to be lol. I’m really glad to have discovered your blog!!

      Thanks, Savindi! Yay, we can be Latin buddies then! 😉 To be honest, Latin was both excruciating and entertaining for me. The moment before the instructor calls on your name to translate several lines is like one of the longest pauses ever. It’s kind of like The Hunger Games, and sometimes some nice fellow will volunteer as tribute, haha. Those were the days. 😛 And wow your blog is beautiful and super cool! And I think I love you even more, YOU LIKE TOTORO! 😀

        No problem :D. Latin definitely got harder for me, but I had an amazing teacher so that helped the process along lol. We had to recite this passage from The Aeneid (I think) and I remember reciting it and my whole class was shocked that I could talk so loudly. I think I shocked myself lol and then I had to go into the class the following year to recite it for them, which was kind of fun.

        And thank you for the lovely comments about my blog :D. And I ADORE Totoro :D. My brother got me a Totoro music doll for my birthday and I have a Totoro poster above my bed lol. Are you a huge fan of Miyazaki films?

          The idea of latin recitations is daunting for me, I had to do it twice and hated it. But that’s amazing! 😀 I am totally not adept in speech to be a stronger speaker! And I am a huge Miyazaki fan! I also really love Hisaishi’s musical soundtracks. I think I’ve mastered ever single Howl’s Moving Castle piece on the piano. The art, story, and music is just breathtakingly beautiful. Spirited Away is another favorite. Do you have any (favorites I mean)?

            It was just a small passage in my case, but yes I think a longer recitation would have scared me too! Ohhh I love Hisaishi’s musical scores too!!! And that is is so amazing that you’ve mastered the pieces from Howl’s Moving Castle 😀 That’s so impressive!! Ohhh have you watched the documentary about Studio Ghibli called The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness? It’s on Netflix now apparently, so I want to watch it sometime!!

            So I only discovered Miyazaki last year tbh! I’ve only watched My Neighbour Totoro, but I’m actually seeing Howl’s Moving Castle and Totoro again next month :D. I’m hoping to see Princess Mononoke this month if a friend will go with me lol. What about you? Do you have a favourite?

              Pshh, whatever the length of the passage I bet it was still impressive! And yes, it was a wonderful feat for me (took me so long with school and everything). And no! I didn’t realize there was a documentary (I must tell my other friend that is all a huge Studio Ghibli fanatic). And funnily enough, I, too, just discovered these animations a year ago as well! And you will love Howl’s Moving Castle. That’s my absolute favorite! Spirited Away comes as a close second, and I enjoyed the story of Princess Mononoke. I actually have only seen those 3 and My Neighbor Totoro. Be sure to tell me how you like Howl’s Moving Castle (so we can fangirl over Howl together)!

                Ahaha thanks :D. I would love to how to play First Love by Hisaishi, it’s one of my favourite tracks! I discovered the documentary because it came to the Toronto International Film Festival last year 🙂 Ahaha I hope I’ll love Howl’s Moving Castle 😀 and yesss we shall fangirl over it together lol. I wanted to buy myself a Totoro plushie and when I saw the prices I was like…yeah…I don’t love plushes that much, even if it’s Totoro. My poster above my bed will have to suffice for now :).

Which bands do you like? Ohhh a Howl’s Moving castle poster would be gorgeous! I’m sure you can find a fanart poster on storenvy or etsy 🙂

                      Oh my gosh, really? That’s my ultimate bias group! My favorite bands are Exo, Beast, Lunafly, SHINee, and Spica. (You can tell I’m boy group bias.) 😉 What groups do you like?                       Ahaha awesome :D. I feel like you’d get along perfectly with my friend who reintroduced me to K-pop! Have you seen the new music video by EXO? Call Me Baby? My friend and I have fangirled over that lol. I’m only familiar with EXO for now. But there’s a Japanese group I like called Old Codex a lot. Another friend is a BTS fan. I’ve seen SHINee music videos popup on my youtube sidebar a lot. I’m going to have to check them out. Any songs that I should start out with?

                      Ahaha well I really like Kai a lot because he’s a fabulous dancer. Tao and Sehun are pretty great too! I’m sad that Chris and Luhan aren’t in the group anymore. It feels weird to watch them without the two of them. But my friend and I really want to watch Chris’s movie which seems really adorable :D. What about you? who is your favourite?

                      Call Me Baby? Ugh, I love it, it totally reminds me of 90s throwback and ‘N Sync. I’m obsessed with their new album, Exodus. And I haven’t heard of Old Codex, I’ll check them out! Kai’s dancing is beautiful, but I actually prefer Lay’s dancing more. Lay’s actually my favorite. That’s why my blog is called xingsings, since Yixing (Lay’s birth name) is more known as the main dancer instead of a vocalist. I love his singing as well, haha. As you can tell I can talk about Exo all day if I could. And it’s actually Kris (but don’t worry, I’ll forgive you since you’re more new to the fandom). 🙂 I haven’t seen his movie though! And what’s your email (if you don’t mind)? I’ll compile you a list of k-pop songs to listen if you’d like (it’ll probably be during the weekend though)!

It’s a review on the video and I loved how it says that Korean groups have like 200% more intensity when it comes to pop music or videos in general. Oh N*Sync lol. I still have my Backstreet Boys magnet on my fridge that I received as a present 15 years ago I think lol. Old Codex does a lot of anime soundtracks, that’s why I know about them lol.

                      Ohhh Lay’s really adorable 😀 And his dancing is great too. There’s something to be said about his presence.     Thanks for the tag! 🙂 enjoyed reading your answers. Agreed with you on question no.3 and 7! Harry Potter all the way. I liked Twilight the first time I read it, but then found out it wasn’t even that good. The word dweeb just reminds me of Screech from the 90s TV show Saved by the Bell lol.
